A 2016 Toyota Tacoma pulled into our shop last Friday. The customer wanted a louder exhaust. Not the factory-quiet kind—he specifically asked for a Ram Tuff muffler. Fine by me. Exhaust work is something we do every week.
I handed the work order to the lead tech, then did my usual walk-around while the truck was still on the lift. It's a habit I started in 2022 when we got burned by a sloppy suspension job. I'm not the lead tech—I'm the quality and brand compliance guy for the shop—but a check costs nothing, and rework costs plenty.
On the passenger side, I noticed the outer tie rod end had a little play. The sway bar link also had a faint click when I rocked it up and down—cracked rubber, tiny gap. I pointed both out to the customer. He said, "That'll last another year."
I've heard that a lot. Mechanically, maybe it would. But a worn tie rod end or sway bar link doesn't fix itself. It eats tires, makes the truck feel floaty at highway speed, and eventually leaves you stranded in a parking lot at the worst possible time.
Let me be clear about something. I'm not the guy who tries to sell you everything. My job is making sure parts match spec and that we're not missing the obvious while we're under the car. After reviewing work orders daily for well over a year, I've landed on a simple belief: 5 minutes of inspection beats 5 days of correction.
When the customer asked what the suspension work would cost, he hesitated. "Can you use cheaper parts to bring the price down?" he asked. I told him about a lesson I learned in 2023. I approved a budget part to save a few bucks, and the spec was off just enough that we had to redo the whole job. The labor ate up any savings, and the customer lost a week. He thought about it for a second and said, "Okay, do it your way."
So we went with Moog parts for both the steering and suspension side. Not for the brand name or some hype—Moog has just been consistent in this space. The sway bar link boots look like they're actually designed to keep dirt out, and the tie rod end threads and taper always measure right. For this truck, we ordered the Moog steering tie rod end ES80805—wait, let me double-check—yes, ES80805. I remember the number pretty well, but don't quote me without checking your VIN.
The Moog sway bar link installation was pretty routine, but a few details matter. Fork-style link nuts have a specific torque spec. Too tight and you crush the ball socket; too loose and it rattles and wears out fast. And there's the preload problem: if you fully tighten the bolts while the link is hanging, the bushing gets twisted once the truck is on the ground. So I always torque the final fasteners with the wheels on the ground. It's a small thing, but it's the difference between a joint that lasts and one that fails early.
The tie rod end is its own little ritual. Before removing the old one, I measured from the outer edge of the tie rod housing to the center of the ball joint stud. That gives me a starting point for the new part. You set the new one close to that same length, then get it on the alignment rack. It's not rocket science, but if you skip it, the truck might not even drive straight enough to make it onto the rack safely.
The exhaust part was straightforward. We kept the factory catalytic converter and kept the O2 sensors in their original locations. The Ram Tuff muffler got welded in, and the tone was exactly what the customer wanted—deep, not obnoxious. But as part of any exhaust job, I always take a quick look at the cat while I'm under there. You don't need to remove it to learn something. If it's blistered or rattling, you know the engine was running rich or misfiring at some point.
That brings up a question I get all the time: how long should a catalytic converter last? My honest answer—under normal driving, an original cat lasting 100,000 to 150,000 miles is common, and plenty of well-maintained vehicles go past 200,000 miles. EPA’s warranty requirement for most vehicles is 8 years or 80,000 miles, but actual service life is usually longer than the legal minimum.
When a cat dies early, it's rarely because it's old. It's usually because the engine has been running wrong—short trips, rich fuel mixture, misfires, or oil getting into the exhaust. A lot of people blame the muffler brand or the exhaust system when the real problem is upstream. Slap a new cat on without fixing the root cause, and you'll be doing the same job again.
That's why I do a quick check of the whole Toyota Tacoma exhaust system before giving a job the green light. You don't have to tear everything apart, but looking at the joints, listening for leaks, and checking the cat for impact damage takes two minutes. It saves you from a phone call two months later.
Tie rod ends, sway bar links, mufflers, catalytic converters—it's all the same story. Parts last longest when the system they live in is healthy. The best way to keep it healthy is to fix the worn stuff early, use parts that meet spec, and torque everything like the engineer intended.
After the alignment, the Tacoma felt noticeably tighter on the road. The customer smiled during the test drive and said he wasn't planning to spend extra beyond the exhaust, but the truck felt like a new vehicle. I told him that's how worn suspension parts work—you get used to how bad it feels until you feel how good it can be.
The point of this story isn't to push Moog or to shame anyone into buying premium parts. It's about understanding the full cost of a decision. A cheap part is cheaper on paper, but when you multiply labor and rework by two, “cheap” disappears. With steering and suspension parts, I'd rather start with something I know is within spec and not leave reliability up to chance.
This industry rarely gets to celebrate complicated wins. But simple wins are everywhere: check the whole car before you start, measure once, use good parts, and double-check your work at the end. Do that, and you rarely have to see the same car twice for the same problem.
As for that Tacoma? It's driving straight and quiet now. I expect it'll stay that way. At least, that's been my experience when you do the job right the first time.
