Moog Steering and Suspension Checklist: K670 Ball Joint, 6000 Coil Springs, and the Filters People Forget

This checklist is for the person behind the parts counter with a customer staring and a courier deadline that isn't moving. It's also for the home mechanic who just pulled a lower ball joint and realized the front-suspension job is about to grow. I've spent the last decade running rush orders for automotive and marine shops, and the mistakes that cost the most are almost always part-number mistakes. Here's the six-point checklist I use before I click order.

1. Verify the Moog Steering & Suspension K670 Ball Joint

The Moog K670 ball joint is one of the most cross-referenced parts in the Moog steering & suspension line. It's a solid replacement when you want OE-quality without the dealer box. But the part number isn't enough.

Most buyers check whether the ball joint has a grease fitting and completely miss the taper angle. Thread size gets all the attention; taper is what actually keeps the joint tight in the knuckle. A wrong taper can feel good on the bench and clunk within a few thousand miles. The question everyone asks is 'does it fit my truck?' The question that matters is 'does the taper match the original part?'

Write down three things before you order: thread size, taper, and boot design. If the boot has a remote grease line or an unusual shield, that changes the part number too.

2. Check the Moog 6000 Front Coil Spring Set

If you're replacing the ball joint but leaving a sagging spring, the alignment will be wasted. The Moog 6000 front coil spring set is the next thing on my list when the front end has been sitting low.

People check free height and skip coil count. Coil count tells you spring rate. The right height with the wrong rate will bottom out on the first real dip. If the old spring has chips or rub marks on the bottom coil, replace it while the knuckle is already apart.

One honest limitation: the Moog 6000 set is a stock-height replacement. If the truck is lifted or the front end carries a plow every winter, this isn't the set for you. No shame in that, but know it before you place the order, not after the spring compressor comes out.

Checkpoint: put old and new springs side by side. Compare wire diameter, total coils, and installed height.

3. Don't Forget the OMC Fuel Pump

The OMC fuel pump is the curveball. If the engine uses an OMC pump, the same engine model was built with two different pump bodies across production years. The model number on the engine cover is not enough. The stamp on the pump body is what matters.

In August 2024, I had 45 minutes to source an OMC fuel pump for a customer four hours away. The engine list said pump A; the photo of the old pump showed pump B. We sent the right one, and the job got done before dark. With that kind of deadline, you don't enjoy the experience—you just hope the next-day freight is on time. It was. I still second-guessed until the phone rang.

This is also the step everyone skips because a fuel pump doesn't belong to a steering and suspension job. But if the customer mentioned a hesitation on the test drive, now is when you look.

4. Confirm the Oil Filter Number

The oil filter number is the easiest thing to get wrong, because it should be easy. Same thread diameter doesn't mean same bypass valve spec. A filter that spins on perfectly can still cause a cold-start rattle if the bypass calibration doesn't match.

When I look up an oil filter number, I cross-reference the OEM part first, then check the replacement number. I also compare the filter length. Should mention: some aftermarket filters are shorter by design, and that's fine as long as the bypass spec matches. If it's a remote mount or a marine oil cooler setup, double-check the thread count.

If you're not sure, take a photo of the old filter's part number before you throw it away. You won't think you need it until the new filter doesn't seat.

5. How to Change an Air Filter in Five Minutes

Air filter replacement is the job nobody quotes until the air box is open. It's cheap, fast, and gives you a visual for 'see, we caught this before it got worse.' Here's the no-thrills version.

  1. Locate the air filter housing: the black box with the big hose going to the throttle body.
  2. Unclip the housing or remove the screws. Lift the cover just enough to see the filter.
  3. Pull the old filter out. Hold it up to the light; if you can't see light through the pleats, replace it.
  4. Vacuum the bottom of the housing so loose dirt doesn't head straight toward the mass airflow sensor.
  5. Drop the new filter in. Make sure the flow arrow points toward the engine.
  6. Close the cover and make sure every clip or screw is locked. A loose air box can pull unmetered air and cause a lean code.

The most ignored step is #4. A clean filter in a dirty housing still sends debris toward the MAF sensor. It's a 15-second extra step, but it's the one that prevents a return visit.

And don't oil a dry filter, and don't blow it out with an air hose and call it good. Replace it.

6. The 60-Second Double-Check Before You Submit

By now, you've verified the Moog ball joint, the 6000 coil spring set, the OMC fuel pump, the oil filter number, and the air filter. Do one more pass.

I have a policy now: after I type in every part number, I verify one physical characteristic. Thread size for the ball joint. Coil count for the spring. Stamped number for the pump. Bypass valve rating for the filter. This came from 2023, when a rush shipment of oil filters had the same prefix but a different thread count. The customer caught it because I told him to keep the old filter. We paid return freight.

Even after I confirm, I still second-guess for a minute. That's normal. A little post-order doubt is what makes you open the box when it arrives and compare the part before it goes on the vehicle.

Common Mistakes Worth Avoiding

  • Don't trust a forum post for fitment. Catalogs come from manufacturers for a reason.
  • Don't use a memory part number for a cross-reference. Look it up fresh.
  • Don't assume OMC pump numbers follow a logical series. They don't.
  • Don't install a filter without comparing it to the old one, even if the box says it fits.

That's the whole checklist. It doesn't make the job glamorous, but it makes it right the first time, which is the only kind of rush order worth taking.
