I don't turn wrenches for a living, but I've become good at asking questions before money leaves the building.

If a truck cranks but won't start, don't rush to buy a sensor. Here is how to test a crankshaft position sensor first, the way our shop does it.
First, look at the connector and the harness. Corroded pins, loose terminals, or a wire chafed against the engine can kill the signal. Fix that and retest before you condemn the sensor.
Then figure out which type of sensor you have. A two-wire inductive sensor can be checked with a multimeter set to AC millivolts. Backprobe the signal and ground wires, crank the engine for five to ten seconds, and watch for a fluctuating voltage. A good sensor should produce a signal that increases with engine speed. Check the workshop manual for the expected range.
A three-wire Hall-effect sensor works differently. Confirm it has reference voltage, usually about 5 V or 12 V, plus a good ground. While cranking, the signal wire should toggle between low and high. If your scan tool shows an RPM reading while cranking, that is another good sign.
One thing people skip: inspect the reluctor ring or timing gear. If it is damaged, or the air gap is wrong, the sensor will not generate a clean signal no matter how new it is.
What do I check before ordering a Scania starter motor?
We have one Scania in our fleet, so I do not buy these every week. But I made one painful mistake with a starter that was listed as compatible, and I still kick myself for it.
The listing said it fit. It bolted up. But the drive did not line up with the ring gear correctly, and the grinding noise told us to stop immediately. If I had sent the original starter's OE part number to the supplier first, we would have saved a full afternoon of downtime.
So now, any Scania starter motor order has to pass these checks:
- The OE part number from the original starter, not just the truck's model name.
- The engine series and chassis VIN. Scania uses different engine families, and a starter for one does not automatically fit another.
- The system voltage. Most heavy trucks run a 24-volt electrical system, but confirm it for that specific chassis.
- A supplier who can tell you which original part number the replacement matches. If the answer is only 'fits Scania', slow down.
A wrong starter can damage the flywheel ring gear. That turns a starter replacement into a much bigger bill. The cheapest starter I ever bought taught me that lesson.
