I've been managing the parts budget for a 37-person fleet maintenance operation since 2019. This isn't another "OEM vs aftermarket" opinion piece. What I'm comparing is total cost of ownership (TCO), not sticker price. TCO means the part, the labor, the chance of a come-back, the warranty claim time, and the cost of downtime when a work truck should be earning money. I've made the mistake of comparing only unit prices before. That's how I learned the hard way.

Let me start with the most expensive item on the list: the wheel bearing & hub assembly. For a 2014 Silverado 1500, based on listings I checked in January 2025:
- OEM (ACDelco): roughly $180–$260 per hub
- MOOG hub assembly: roughly $150–$210
- Generic no-name: $80–$130
I've bought the $90 hub. I've also watched it come back. The most frustrating part: it never fails in the shop. It fails at 8,000 miles, on a Tuesday morning, with a driver and a load of freight. The tow, the re-do labor, the angry phone call — that eats any savings from the part purchase.
What makes the MOOG hub assembly worth the premium in my book is the protective coating on the housing, and an ABS sensor wire that routes exactly like the factory one. The generic hub I tested back in 2023 had a sensor lead that was two inches short. Two inches. And the warranty claim on that one required a photo, a receipt, a form, and about six days of email follow-up. The one time I claimed a MOOG warranty, it was one phone call and an RMA number.
The numbers said buy the cheap hub and replace more often. My gut said pay for MOOG. I went with my gut — and the surprise wasn't the failure rate. It was the warranty handling that nobody puts on a spec sheet. (Prices move around, by the way; these are from the January 2025 catalogs, so treat them as a reference, not a quote.)

Now for a part most people don't think about until they're already in deep: the tie rod end adjusting sleeve. On a 2014 Silverado, that's MOOG part number ES3090S — the threaded sleeve that connects the inner and outer tie rods.
Let me rephrase why this part matters: it's what keeps your alignment from drifting, and it's the part that seizes up in salt-belt states. I've seen more seized adjusting sleeves than I'd like to count.
Here's the price spread, based on what I've seen lately: the MOOG ES3090S runs $15–25 (I want to say $18, but don't quote me — I haven't priced it this quarter). Generic sleeves run $6–10. OEM runs $20–30, if you can still get it separately. So the difference between the MOOG sleeve and the generic is about the cost of a lunch order.
Is that $12 worth it? In my experience, yes — and it's not about the material, it's about the thread. MOOG uses a rolled thread on the ES3090S, which is a real fatigue-life difference, not a marketing one. I don't have hard data on cycle counts, but across our fleet, the sleeves we didn't upgrade seized at a noticeably higher rate. That's anecdotal — but it's six years of anecdotal, and that's the best kind of data you get in this business.
2014 Silverado water pump: the part I don't buy from MOOG
Here's where I'll probably lose some people. I do not buy MOOG for the 2014 Silverado water pump. MOOG's core business is steering and suspension. A water pump is a cooling system part, and for that I go to a cooling specialist — Gates, Airtex, or the OEM, ACDelco.
That's not a criticism of MOOG. In fact, it's the opposite. A vendor who says "this isn't our strength — here's who does it better" earns my trust for everything else. I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises. That's exactly why I keep buying MOOG for the parts they do make.
Pricing for a 2014 Silverado water pump, from wholesale listings I pulled in December 2024: OEM ACDelco runs $90–$160 with the gasket included. A cooling-specialist aftermarket pump runs $70–$130. Budget pumps sit at $40–$60.
I got burned on the budget pump once. The numbers said the $45 option was fine — similar specs, half the price. Something felt off about the casting when I held it. My gut said don't install this. I let the lead tech install it anyway. We had a coolant leak at the mating surface within six weeks. The warranty covered the part; it did not cover the $180 in labor. The $45 "savings" turned into a $135 loss.
Never expected the lesson to be about a water pump. But that's how this trade works — the expensive education always comes from the cheapest parts.
Cooling fan relay & fuel pump: small parts, big diagnostic traps
The cooling fan relay and the fuel pump belong in the same conversation because they're the two most misdiagnosed parts on a 2014 Silverado, at least in the ones I've seen.
Cooling fan relay price. The relay is the cheapest component in the cooling fan system. An OEM ACDelco relay runs $25–$45. A branded aftermarket relay (Standard, Tyco-style) runs $10–$20. A no-name relay runs $5–$10. And the no-name one is usually the last thing people try after the expensive parts have already been replaced.
I've seen shops replace the fan motor, the connector, and the fuse — then someone finally swaps a $12 relay and the fan kicks back on. Diagnose first. That's the TCO answer.
The no-name relay might be fine. It might also have an internal coil that overheats after a few heat cycles. I've bought the $7 relay for low-priority vehicles because the failure cost was low. I would not put one in a truck that does heavy towing. You kinda have to decide what a failure costs you in your operation.
How to fix a fuel pump (the diagnostic-first version). When a 2014 Silverado cranks but won't start, "fuel pump" is everyone's first guess. Here's the order I've settled on after watching too many people commit to a fuel pump replacement that wasn't needed:
- Check the fuel pump relay and fuse first. Both are in the under-hood fuse block. If the relay clicks but you get no fuel pressure, it's probably not the relay.
- Check fuel pressure at the rail with a gauge. For the 5.3L V8, you want to see 55–62 psi with the key on. Verify against your engine's spec; don't trust my memory.
- If you have no pressure and the relay and fuse are good, check the fuel pump driver module. GM had corrosion issues in the frame-mounted module location on trucks in this era (2014–2016).
If it is the pump: an OEM fuel pump for a 2014 Silverado runs $180–$320. Aftermarket runs $80–$180. The labor is the real cost — dropping the tank or pulling the bed is a 2–4 hour job. That's exactly why you test everything else before you condemn the pump.
I do not have hard data on aftermarket fuel pump survival rates. What I can say anecdotally: I've replaced two budget pumps that failed inside 12 months. The labor to redo them was three times the cost of the pump. Do the math on that before you order the cheap one.
What I'd actually buy (and what I'd skip)
There's no single answer, because the right call depends on who's paying the labor. Here's how I decide:
If you're a shop or fleet (you pay real labor costs):
- Hub assemblies: MOOG. The premium over generic is worth the warranty handling alone.
- Tie rod end adjusting sleeve: MOOG ES3090S. It's $12 more. You'll spend far more than $12 when it seizes.
- Water pump: OEM or a cooling specialist. Don't buy a water pump from a steering-and-suspension brand, no matter how much you trust them.
- Cooling fan relay: Branded relay, OEM or quality aftermarket. A $7 no-name can strand a truck in July.
- Fuel pump: OEM or established aftermarket. And only after you've checked the relay, fuse, pressure, and driver module.
If you're a DIYer (your labor is free, but your time is not):
- Hub assemblies: MOOG if the budget allows. If not, a mid-range brand is defensible — just know the warranty claim might be painful.
- Tie rod sleeve: Don't skip the ES3090S. It's an $18 part in a $300 job.
- Water pump: OEM. You don't want to do that job twice.
- Relay and fuel pump: Same logic. Diagnose first, then buy the part once.
The bottom line: the cheapest part is rarely the least expensive part. I've been writing parts purchase orders for six years, and every loss I've taken — every single one — came from a part that was cheap on paper and expensive in the bay. MOOG isn't always the answer. But for steering and suspension on a 2014 Silverado, it's the answer more often than not.
