When to Walk Away
Before a part goes onto a vehicle, it goes across my bench. I'm a quality/compliance manager at an automotive parts company. I review every incoming batch before it reaches customers—roughly 1,200 part numbers a year. In 2024, I rejected about 7% of first deliveries. Not because the parts were cheap. Because they were wrong in ways that only show up after install.
This checklist has six steps and takes about 15 minutes. It works for anyone about to install a Moog control arm or stabilizer link, a brake performance kit, an oil filter, or wheel spacers. It's not a full repair guide. It's a way to catch the mistakes before the car comes back with clunks, vibrations, or leaks.
What This Checklist Is For
Use this if you're doing any of these:
- Replacing a worn arm with a Moog rk100123 control arm or another OE-style arm
- Upgrading anti-roll bar links, like the Moog suspension stabilizer bar link k750662
- Installing a brake upgrade kit, including a Moza brake performance kit
- Changing the oil and filter on a late-model car, such as the 2025 Camry oil filter

If you're doing one of these, the steps below take maybe 15 minutes. Skip them and you might save time now and lose a weekend later.
Step 1: Confirm the Part Number Against the Vehicle, Not Against the Old Part
It's tempting to think you can just order the same part number that came off and be fine. But supersessions happen. A box labeled "Moog rk100123 control arm" can look identical to the old arm and still have different ball joint taper dimensions if the application chart is not checked.
Here's what I do:
- Check the application range for year, make, model, and trim. "Corolla" is not enough. "Corolla XSE with sport package" might be different.
- Check the part number against a VIN lookup if possible.
- Look for a superseded part number. The box may say "replaces OEM 48068-0E090" but the actual fitment may require a different hardware kit.
Also, don't assume the old part was the right one. A previously replaced arm with the wrong offset can cause premature tire wear for years. The part number on the old part is not proof.
Step 2: Check Physical Fit Before Touching a Torque Wrench
A part can be right in the catalog and wrong in the hand. That's where most of my rejections come from. It's tempting to trust the box. But the label does not control the taper angle.
For a control arm:
- Measure between the frame mounting holes. A 2-3mm difference changes alignment range.
- Check the ball joint stud taper and thread. A loose taper in the knuckle will click under load.
- Check the boot for damage and make sure it's actually lubricated, not just "assembled."
For a stabilizer bar link like the Moog suspension stabilizer bar link k750662:
- Compare overall length with the old link. A link that's 5mm longer changes bar preload.
- Check the thread pitch on both ends. The nut may look right but start cross-threading.
- Check the orientation of the ball sockets. Some links are angled; flipping them 180 degrees is not the same.
Let me rephrase that: the part has to match the geometry of the vehicle, not just the shape of the old part. The old part may have been worn or bent. You need the OE dimension.
Step 3: The Spacer Question People Ask Too Late
"What is hub centric wheel spacers?"—if you're shopping for centering, this is the right question.
A wheel spacer needs to center the wheel on the hub. A hub-centric spacer has a center bore machined to fit snugly around the vehicle's hub flange. The wheel then sits on that spacer's center hub. A lug-centric spacer is essentially a flat plate with holes; the wheel is centered by the lug nuts as they're tightened. That can work, but it leaves more room for vibration and hardware fatigue.
Whenever I check a spacer kit, I do three things:
- Verify the hub bore of the spacer matches the vehicle hub. If there's more than a few tenths of a millimeter of play, it's not hub-centric, no matter what the listing says.
- Verify the wheel's center bore also sits on the spacer's locating lip. A wheel can still be lug-centric if the wheel bore is too big for the spacer.
- Check the lug seat and studs. If the spacer is thicker than about 15mm, you may need longer studs or different bolts.
Bottom line: hub centric is about transferring load to the hub, not just filling the bolt holes. If you're buying spacers, buy them for your specific hub bore, not for a bolt pattern.
Step 4: Open the Brake Kit Box Before You Plan the Install
Brake kits are not all the same. A brake performance kit might include pads and rotors, or pads plus hardware, shims, clips, and fluid. If you assume the box includes the right anti-rattle clips, you may find out at midnight on a Saturday.
Take the Moza brake performance kit as an example. The kit may suit a specific caliper style, and the shims included might not match the older calipers. You need to know what calipers you have before you order.
What I check:
- Pad backing plate flatness. A slightly bent plate causes uneven contact.
- Rotor surface and runout. New rotors can have edge rust that prevents full pad contact.
- Hardware kit contents. Clip count, pin condition, shim shape.
- Caliper compatibility. If the piston bore size is different from OE, pedal feel changes.
People think a brake kit will fix a bad brake job. Actually, the caliper condition and brake fluid age matter more than the shiny rotors. If the caliper slides are stuck, a high-end kit still won't stop straight.
Step 5: Oil Filter Checks That Usually Get Skipped
Oil filters seem boring. That's why they cause problems.
For a 2025 Camry oil filter, the engine variant and build date might change the cartridge spec. The same engine block can use different filters if the housing cap changed. So don't just go by the year.
My filter checklist:
- Confirm the bypass valve spec. A filter with a higher bypass pressure than the engine's oil system can restrict cold-start flow.
- Check the gasket O-ring size and fit on the housing. A dry or wrong O-ring is the number one leak cause.
- Make sure the media is dry and the filter is not full of packaging bits. You would be surprised.
- For spin-on filters, confirm the thread size and the anti-drainback valve orientation.
A filter might look identical to the old one but have a different thread or bypass rating. The numbers stamped on the side are not a decorative pattern—they're there for a reason.
Step 6: Torque It Right and Recheck After a Few Miles
This is the step most people ignore because it's boring.
Torque specs exist because ball joints, links, and control arms require a specific preload. A link nut that's too tight can smash the ball socket and cause binding. A control arm bushing bolt that's torqued while the suspension hangs can be over-stressed at ride height.
General order I follow:
- Install the arm and tighten the ball joint nut to spec, but wait until the car is at ride height to tighten the bushing end bolts.
- Torque lug nuts or wheel spacer studs in a star pattern, in stages. If you're using hub-centric spacers, torque to the lower end of spec, then re-torque after 30-50 miles.
- Turn the steering lock to lock and check for contact between the new parts, lines, or inner fender.
There's something satisfying about hearing the torque wrench click and knowing the suspension is loaded properly. That click beats a clunking noise later.
When to Walk Away
No part is perfect for every vehicle. A Moog rk100123 control arm is a good fit for a specific application, not a universal solution. The same is true for the stabilizer bar link k750662, any brake kit, and any oil filter. If the catalog says "maybe," walk away.
Here are the deal-breakers:
- If the part doesn't match the OE dimensions, don't force it.
- If the brake kit hardware doesn't fit your caliper, don't "modify" the clips.
- If a spacer isn't hub-centric for your vehicle, don't rely on lug nuts to center it forever.
- If a filter's bypass valve spec is unknown, buy one with a published spec.
That said, there's another side. If you're running a heavily modified suspension or converting to big brakes, this checklist is not enough. You need a fabricator or an engineer looking at the whole system. And if you're not comfortable with those checks, have a shop do the install. There's no shame in that—the shame is in ignoring the clunk after the first drive.
Bottom line: I'd rather reject a part at the bench than replace it on the customer's driveway. A little checking goes a long way.
